Susan Collins

Susan Collins assumed office as a United States senator for Maine in January 1997.

Collins was born in Caribou, Maine, on December 7, 1952. Both of her parents have served as mayor of Caribou, and her father served in the Maine state Senate. She graduated from St. Lawrence University in 1975. She worked on the staff of U.S. Senator William Cohen from 1975-1987. She served as commissioner of the Maine Department of Professional and Financial Regulation from 1987-1992, as the New England regional director of the U.S. Small Business Administration in 1992, and as deputy state treasurer of Massachusetts in 1993.

In June 1994, Collins became the first woman in Maine's history to win the major-party nomination for governor; however, she lost in the general election.
