Lauren Underwood assumed office as the U.S. representative for Illinois’ 14th District on Jan. 3, 2019.

Underwood was born on October 4, 1986, in Mayfield Heights, Ohio, and grew up in Naperville, Illinois. She worked on the Naperville's Fair Housing Advisory Commission from 2003-2004. She earned a Bachelor of Science in nursing from the University of Michigan in 2008, and a Master of Science in nursing and Master of Public Health in public health nursing and health policy from Johns Hopkins University in 2009.

Prior to her election to Congress, Underwood worked at the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services as a policy coordinator and then as a senior advisor.

She is the senior director of strategy and regulatory affairs at Next Level Health and an adjunct instructor for Georgetown University School of Nursing and Health Studies. She was previously appointed by President Barack Obama to serve as a senior advisor at the United States Department of Health and Human Services.
