Gina Ortiz Jones was elected as mayor of San Antonio, Texas, on June 7, 2025. An American Iraq War veteran and intelligence officer, she previously served as under secretary of the Air Force (2021-2024) under the Biden administration.

Ortiz Jones was born on Feb. 1, 1981, and grew up in San Antonio. Attending college on an ROTC scholarship, Ortiz Jones earned a joint bachelor's degree in East Asian studies and economics and master's degree in economics from Boston College in 2003. She later earned a master's degree in global and international studies from the University of Kansas in 2012 and another master's degree in military arts and sciences at the U.S. Army School of Advanced Military Studies of the United States Army Command and General Staff College. in 2013.

After college, Ortiz Jones joined the U.S. Air Force as an intelligence officer and was deployed to Iraq. After leaving the Air Force, she was a military advisor in Central and South America with the 470th Military Intelligence Brigade and U.S. Army South and then worked as an intelligence analyst for U.S. Africa Command in Germany. From 2013 to 2015, she was a senior strategic planner and special advisor for the Defense Intelligence Agency at Joint Base Anacostia-Bolling, Washington, D.C.. From 2016-2017, she served under the U.S. trade representative. In 2018 and 2020, she was the Democratic nominee for Texas' 23rd congressional district.
