Sheila Jackson Lee assumed office in January 1995, representing the 18th District of Texas in the United States House of Representatives, serving until her death on July 19, 2024.

Jackson Lee was born January 12, 1950, and graduated from Jamaica High School in Queens. She completed a Bachelor of Arts in political science from Yale University and a Juris Doctorate from the University of Virginia Law School.

Prior to entering Congress, Jackson Lee served two terms as one of the first African American woman at-large members of the Houston City Council, chairing the first Human Relations Committee. She also served as the associate municipal court judge for the city of Houston.
