Lourdes "Lou" Leon Guerrero assumed office as governor of Guam on Jan. 7, 2019, Guam's first female governor.
Leon Guerrero was born in Guam. Her father, Jesus Sablan Leon Guerrero, founded the Bank of Guam. She earned earned a Bachelor of Science in nursing from California State University, Los Angeles in 1973 and a Master of Public Health from the University of California, Los Angeles in 1979. She worked as a nurse at a Santa Monica, California, hospital before returning to Guam in 1980, where she worked at Guam Memorial Hospital, eventually becoming the hospital's assistant nursing director and then director of operations at the Family Health Plan clinic from 1990 to 1994.
Leon Guerrero served as a senator in the Guam legislature from 1995 to 2007.
In 2009, Leon Guerrero graduated from Pacific Coast Banking School at the University of Washington and succeeded her father and her brother as chairwoman of the board, chief executive officer and president of the Bank of Guam. In August 2011, she was appointed director of the BankGuam Holding Company.
