Emilia Sykes is a member of the Ohio House of Representatives, representing District 34. Sykes is running for election to the U.S. House to represent Ohio’s 13th congressional district.

Sykes was born in Akron, Ohio, on January 4, 1986. She received a bachelor’s degree in psychology from Kent State University and a law degree and master’s degree in public health from the University of Florida.

Before serving in political office, Sykes worked as an administrative staff advisor at the Summit County Fiscal Office and as a law clerk to the chief justice of the U.S. Bankruptcy Court for the Northern District of Georgia. She then went on to serve as state house minority leader from 2019 to 2021 before becoming a representative.

During her first year as leader, the percentage of bipartisan bills passed was nearly double each of the previous two legislative sessions. She has received numerous awards, including the Legislator of the Year from the Ohio Minority Business Enterprise and the Champion for Children award from Summit Children’s Services.
