Emilia Sykes assumed office as a U.S. representative for Ohio's 13th congressional district on Jan. 3, 2023.
Sykes was born in Akron, Ohio, on Jan. 4, 1986. She received a bachelor’s degree in psychology from Kent State University and a law degree and master’s degree in public health from the University of Florida.
Before serving in political office, Sykes worked as an administrative staff advisor at the Summit County Fiscal Office and as a law clerk to the chief justice of the U.S. Bankruptcy Court for the Northern District of Georgia. She then went on to serve as state house minority leader from 2019-2021 before becoming a state representative.
