HIRONO: When I was a young girl growing up in Japan, my mother endured a really terrible marriage at the hands of an abusive husband. My mother planned and plotted in secret to get us all away. She boarded us on the President Cleveland and we set sail for America. Those early years were really tough. We literally were living paycheck to paycheck. I learned to be self-reliant.
