Biography

Valerie P. Foushee assumed office in the U.S. House of Representatives on Jan. 3, 2023, representing North Carolina's 4th Congressional District. 

Foushee was born and raised in Orange County, North Carolina. She earned a bachelor's degree in political science and Afro and African-American studies from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. Her career experience includes working as an administrator with the Chapel Hill Police Department and in administrative positions with insurance and research companies. 

She also served on the Chapel Hill-Carrboro City School Board, and then was the first African American female elected to the Orange County Board of Commissioners. She would go on to serve in the North Carolina state House and then the state Senate.
