Valerie McCray was the Democratic nominee in the 2024 election for the U.S. Senate to represent Indiana, losing in the general election.

McCray was born in Indianapolis, Indiana, and graduated from Arsenal Technical High School. She earned a bachelor’s degree and a master’s degree from the University of Michigan, and completed a doctor of philosophy degree in psychology from the same university in 2000.

Prior to entering the political realm, McCray worked as a clinical psychologist for Reset Psychological Services, before becoming the clinical director of MHM Services Inc. She later became the lead psychologist with Correctional Medical Services.

In 2024, McCray announced her candidacy for the U.S. Senate seat in Indiana. She is the first black woman to run for one of Indiana’s U.S. Senate seats.
