Missy Cotter Smasal was the Democratic nominee for Virginia’s 2nd Congressional District in the 2024 race, losing to incumbent Jennifer Kiggans in the general election.

Cotter Smasal earned a bachelor’s degree in political science from the U.S. Naval Academy and a master’s degree in education from Old Dominion University. After graduating, she served in the Navy as a surface warfare officer during the Iraq War. Smasal’s career experience also includes operating a small business, directing a nonprofit agency, and serving as an adjunct professor.

In 2020, Cotter Smasal ran an unsuccessful campaign for a seat in the Virginia State Senate. Cotter Smasal announced her intention to run for the U.S. House of Representatives in September 2023.
