Meaningful Change -- July 23, 2020

Ilhan Omar: Our systems are at a breaking point. A broken health care system unable to adequately address a public health pandemic, that has now killed over 130,000 people, including my father. A broken economic system that has led to 40 million people loosing their jobs, and businesses shuting down throughout our district. A broken housing system that's left many Minnesotans displaced, or housing insecure. A broken justice system that has victumized black and brown Minnesotans in policing, in our judiciary systems, and in our prisons. For too long, corporate dollars and special interests have dominated our politics, making meaningful change impossible.
But it doesn't have to be this way. People are pouring out into the streets, fists held up high, calling for transformative change. We can translate our cries for justice into legislation, and that's the fight we have been leading in Congress. Complacency has never gotten us the economic and social investment that our societies need. We've been fighting for home for all, to make sure every Minnesotan has a roof over their head. We've been fighting for Medicare for all, to make sure no Minnesotan dies because they're too poor to live. And, we have been fighting for a Green New Deal to make sure our kids can grow up on a livable planet.
It has not been easy. We have taken on corporations who prioritize profit over people. We have taken on a campaign finance system fueled by greed and corporate cash. We have taken on a justice system that doesn't fully recognize our humanity. We have taken on a president who wants to send us back.
