Say Her Name (#SayHerName)

After criticism from women within and outside of the Black Lives Matter movement that the movement has favored Black men's experiences, the African American Policy Forum launched the #SayHerName campaign in February 2015 to raise awareness for Black female victims of police brutality and anti-Black violence in the United States and to bring their names into the Black Lives Matter protest. #SayHerName highlights gender-specific ways in which Black women are disproportionately affected by fatal acts of racial injustice and documents stories of Black women who have been killed by police.

Their May 2015 report outlined the goals and objectives of the movement, and included recommendations for engaging communities in conversation and advocacy around Black women’s experiences of police violence, considering race and gender in policy initiatives to combat state violence, and adopting policies to end sexual abuse and harassment by police officers.
