BROWN: When people first suggested I run for office, I said, "Well wait a minute here. I have a young son." One night they called a late-night session, and I picked my son up from the childcare center. I went and sat at my desk and received a phone call that said, "Sorry – no children allowed." We started to focus on expanding childcare options. One of the things I learned is you could get more done by working with people. That's a lesson that Congress could use today.
