INTERVIEWER: What did Hillary stand to gain from her affiliation with you?

SHANE: Nothing. Nothing! And instead, she made me feel like I was on a mountain. I came into foster care at four years old. Aging out of foster care is one of the cruelest things we can do to a child. People aren't jumping up and down to take in a 14 year old black boy. Foster children are the forgotten children. Hillary Clinton has not forgotten about foster children. Once she was made aware that America had children languishing in foster care, that were just not moving, her attitude was: not on my watch. Not while I'm First Lady. That was groundbreaking. That was: I'm going to use the Office of the First Lady to give voice to a population of people that are voiceless.

TEXT: In the 1990s, Hillary Clinton personally lobbied Republicans and Democrats in support of a law to rewrite the rules on adoption and foster care.

CLINTON: No young person should have to make the passage to adulthood alone.

SHANE: She asked me to tell my story. She asked me to tell her what happened to me. And she asked me what did I think would have made a difference. She wanted real-life experience. I felt...I was not only excited, I felt important. I felt that I mattered. I was a little…I guess I was scared. But she did everything to make me feel like I belonged there. I belonged in the White House. Can you imagine? From foster care to the White House. The fact that I, that she made someone, that for so long felt so insignificant, matter…. That's the essence of that woman. And that's the true fiber of her character. And I will never forget that. You would be hard-pressed to figure out: Why, Hillary? What's the connection to this? There's nothing in this for you. Being a champion for children, an advocate for children, is not easy. So when someone decides that that's going to be their cause, you may not know exactly what it is, but it's rooted in something other than notoriety. It's rooted in something other than glory or fame. This is a woman who really does care. Having my own family means the world to me.

TEXT: Shane adopted four boys out of foster care. The process was made easier by the Adoption and Safe Families Act, which Hillary was instrumental in passing.

SHANE: I want that for everyone.
