Biography

Xochitl Torres Small served as the U.S. deputy secretary of agriculture from 2023 to 2025, the first Latina to hold that position. Previously, she was served as the U.S. representative for the 2nd Congressional District of New Mexico from 2019-2021. 

Torres Small grew up in Las Cruces, New Mexico. She graduated from Georgetown University, then returned to Las Cruces and served as field representative for Senator Tom Udall. She went on to earn her law degree from the University of New Mexico and practiced natural resource and water law.
