Narges Mohammadi

Narges Mohammadi is a journalist, human rights advocate, and the 2023 Nobel Peace Prize recipient for “her fight against the oppression of women in Iran and her fight to promote human rights and freedom for all.”

Mohammadi was born on April 21, 1972, in Zanjan, Iran. She earned a bachelor’s degree in physics from Imam Khomeini International University. In college, she wrote articles for the student newspaper in support of women’s rights and was a member of a political student group. After graduation, she worked as a professional engineer and then as a journalist for reformist newspapers. In 2003, she joined the Defenders of Human Rights Center, founded by fellow Iranian and Nobel Peace Prize laureate Shirin Ebadi, now serving as deputy director.

First arrested in 1998 for her criticism of the Iranian government, Mohammadi has been arrested 13 times, sentenced to a total of 36 years in prison and 154 lashes, and has spent 135 days in solitary confinement.
