Janet Yellen served as secretary of the treasury from 2021-2025. She was the first woman to serve in the role.

Yellen was born on August 13, 1946, in Brooklyn, New York. She obtained a bachelor's degree in economics from Brown University in 1967 and a doctorate degree in economics from Yale University in 1971. Yellen served as assistant professor at Harvard. University from 1971-1976 before working as an economist for the Federal Reserve Board of Directors from 1977-1978. She then lectured at the London School of Economics and Political Science from 1978-1980 before working as a faculty member at the University of California at Berkeley from 1980-1994.

In 1994, President Clinton appointed Yellen to the Federal Reserve Board of Directors. Three years later, she was chosen by President Clinton to chair the White House Council of Economic Advisors. Yellen then served as president and CEO of the Federal Reserve Bank of San Francisco from 2004-2010. In 2010, President Obama selected Yellen to become vice chair of the Federal Reserve, where she then served as chair from 2014-2018.
