Activist Inaugural Poet

Biography

Amanda Gorman is an award-winning writer, poet, and activist. She recited her poem “The Hill We Climb” at the 2021 presidential inauguration of Joe Biden. She is the youngest inaugural poet in U.S. history. 

Gorman was born on March 7, 1998, in Los Angeles, California. She began writing at a very young age and was encouraged to practice her writing by her mother. In 2020, Gorman graduated cum laude from Harvard University with a Bachelor of Arts in sociology. In 2017, Gorman was named the first National Youth Poet Laureate.
