HERBERT BUHL: We can do severe psychological and emotional harm to kids by putting them in a situation where they can be abused. I first met Hillary in the early 1970s when she was here fighting for the rights of children in South Carolina.
DR. THELMA SOJOURNER: At that time, children who were in trouble, they were actually put in the adult jails.
BUHL: We had several clients who were abused by the adult prisoners. Hillary came to South Carolina to assist and investigate with the Children's Defense Fund.
SOJOURNER: Hillary helped to make a difference in this county, and not only for this county but for children, period.
BUHL: After three years of litigation, the state finally agreed that children could no longer be kept in the same cell with adults.
SOJOURNER: She had a tremendous desire to see that children were treated right. This community will never forget.
BUHL: She could have gotten a job anywhere out of law school with her credentials, but she has taken the route of public service. I think it shows that her heart is in the right place.
SOJOURNER: I really feel very strongly that she'll able to do the things that she says she's going to do.
